Family Services

In response to the ever-expanding needs of our community, and in accordance with Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center’s vision and mission, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce the formation of a new department focused on the spiritual and religious needs of families in our community. The new department, the Family Services Department, will provide family support in a closer and more individualized format and wherever needs arise within our community.

Sh. Shaker Elsayed | Meet our Family Services Director

Since 1972, Sheikh Shaker worked as a teacher, a volunteer Imam of the Local Jameyyah Shareyyah Mosques, Cairo Egypt, an Imam of the Islamic Center, Wash. D. C., Taught Islamic Studies at the LIR Institute, the American University, Washington D. C., Principal K-12 school, Director of Education at Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Founding President of the American Egyptian Council, and the Secretary-General of the Muslim American Society.

Marriage Procedure

💍 Marriage Preparation Journey 🕌

Embark on a wonderful journey with guidance from Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center. We’re here to prepare you for this beautiful expedition.

Marriage Procedure at DAH:

  • ✅ Obtain a marriage license from any Virginia court or a marriage certificate from another state.
  • ✅ Schedule an appointment with the imam within sixty days from the license issue date. No timeline for marriage certificates.
  • ✅ Premarital counseling is required. Book a session for 30 min or 1 hr.

Essentials 📜

Bring yourselves, a wali for the bride, two Muslim male witnesses, all IDs, court papers, and declare the Mahr.

Fees 💵

$300 for in-house ceremonies. Starting at $500 for outside ceremonies. Various payment forms accepted.

Divorce

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم 📜

Divorce is an unfortunate reality when reconciliation is not a solution. There are a number of issues that arise when a couple is unable to reconcile, and Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center is here to help smoothen that transition as much as possible.

Initial Steps 🛤️

  1. Have the couple make an appointment with a spiritual counselor to see if the marriage is reconcilable.
  2. If there is a chance for reconciliation, then an appropriate reconciliation strategy will be presented and followed up with accordingly by the assigned spiritual counselor with the additional input from a licensed marriage counselor as needed.

Divorce Process 📜

Mutual Agreement

If both parties agree on a divorce, they may part on whatever terms they agree on. The following conditions apply:

  • If the wife chooses to return the mahr (marriage dower) or a part of it, then the divorce will be considered a khul’.
  • If there is no compensation, then the divorce will be considered a talaq.
  • When both parties come in to finalize the Islamic divorce the husband and wife cannot have been intimate since her last menstrual cycle and she currently cannot be her menstrual cycle at the time of divorce

Husband as Contesting Party

If the husband is the contesting party, the following conditions apply:

  • If the wife chooses to return the mahr (marriage dower) or a part of it, then the divorce will be considered a khul’.
  • If there is no compensation, then the divorce will be considered a talaq.
  • When both parties come in to finalize the Islamic divorce the husband and wife cannot have been intimate since her last menstrual cycle and she cannot be on her menstrual cycle at the time of divorce

Wife as Contesting Party

If the wife is the contesting party, the following steps should be followed:

  • She can request a divorce and offer to return the mahr (marriage dower) and/or provide some type of financial compensation if he agrees. This would be considered a khul’.
  • When both parties come in to finalize the Islamic divorce the husband and wife cannot have been intimate since her last menstrual cycle and she cannot be on her menstrual cycle at the time of divorce

Finalization 🔏

A divorce certificate from DAH will not be issued until the court divorce has been finalized and must be done so in all of the divorce situations presented previously.

“Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live with in tranquillity: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect” (30:21)

Seeking a spouse can be a daunting task, especially with all of the resources, apps, and websites that are available. We at Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center have created a list of local resources to help make that task less intimidating. 🌐
