Countdown Till Mic Night 2018
“Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything”
Every year Dar Al-Hijrah Youth hosts an open mic where local, national, international performers share their words. This year the theme is “Believe In Something Even If It Means Sacrificing Everything.” This theme came to be from the Nike ad released a few months ago with the former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the face of it. Kaepernick is known for starting the kneeling activism. It also happens to be the most important of Islam, Allah says in Surah Al Nisa,

“O you who have believed, be constantly upright with equity (with others), witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or (your) parents and nearest kin. In case (the person) is rich or poor, then Allah is the Best Patron for both. So do not ever follow prejudice, so as to do justice; and in case you twist or veer away, then surely Allah has been Ever-Cognizant of whatever you do.” (Quran 4:135)
Social activism is a very important part of Islam. During this political climate, our voices, our stories, our art need to be heard and shared. That’s why, #dahyouth invites the community whatever gender, age, and religion the artists may hold. Aside from the open mic performances in the evening, there will be a poetry and calligraphy workshop. This year’s open mic is a collaboration between three organizations; The Sanctuaries, Crescent Moon Nights, and Studio Pause. These local organizations use art and poetry to bring the community together. We would love to see our community come together for the sake of Allah in a night filled with empowerment and belief.
